Through a Glass Darkly

Caesar The album's tracks evoke a deceptive serenity, similar to the calm before a storm. Although the influences of 1970s Kosmische music are present, Grunditz reworks them with a unique perspective, constructing soundscapes that seem to belong to another time and place. Each track is a fragment of memory, seen through a lens that distorts rather than clarifies. www.versacrum.com/vs/2024/08/michael-grunditz-through-a-glass-darkly.html
Favorite track: Peace.

Michael Borella While Through a Glass Darkly bears some resemblance to 1970s Kosmische music, it extends beyond that. The album provides pastoral sonic landscapes viewed through a twisted lens that becomes more and more distorted. Even after multiple listens, it produces a sense of disorientation in which one’s perception of reality is called into question.

about

"Through a Glass Darkly" marks the debut of Swedish composer Michael Grunditz on Reverse Alignment. Pure and evocative in its quiet unfolding, Grunditz's music is like an island of peace and nostalgia in a world dominated by chaos. An album of photographs of Nordic landscapes viewed through opaque glass, a short Super 8 film of memories of an era that will never return. However, the power of the music is such that it immortalizes these memories in minimalistic scores, and every note remains fixed in the mind as if it belongs to a realm of Platonic ideas that can never perish.

Michael Grunditz was born in 1974 and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden. He began studying piano in 1981, receiving a classically oriented musical education. As a young boy, Michael was also an active choir singer, which inspired him to enroll in music school in 1984. There, he delved into music theory and began exploring composition and improvisation.

In 1990, Michael advanced his music education, significantly shaping his musical expression over the next two years. He joined an avant-garde ensemble called "Torsdagsgruppen," where he experienced the freedom of creating music without traditional constraints. Although computers were starting to be used in music production, multitrack cassette recorders were the primary means of recording music at the time. From 1992 to 1993, Michael co-led children's choirs, further honing his musical skills.

In 2005, he discovered the potential of computers for music production, both for notation and audio. This revelation reignited his passion for composing and producing music. Since then, Michael has written and produced over 400 pieces, blending acoustic and electronic instruments with field recordings. He excels in genres within the classical and ambient spectra and often enjoys writing music with pen and paper in his favorite armchair.

Selected Works:

2014: Piano Works - A collection of pieces for piano, including both notated compositions and improvisations.
2017: Hope and Despair - An exploration of electronic minimalism.
2018: Broken Glasses - A diverse journey through various styles.
2021: In the Evening - Work for solo violin and electronics.
2022: Collaborations with cellist Henrik Meierkord, ranging from classical modernism to modern ambient.
